The Cancan Sari Drape

Hello Beautiful people!

How’s everything going? I’m so excited that our first Indian festival or to be more specific our South Indian New Year is on the end of this week. I personally love and value our culture & traditions irrespective of where I live. I feel it is important to remember them even if we are used to our busy modern lifestyle 🙂 Our culture has some amazing respect in everyone’s heart and it is always fun to celebrate festivals, isn’t it 🙂

I love dressing up in ethnic Indian outfits during festive times, as to be honest that’s like the only time we get a chance to do. With ethnic Indian outfits I actually meant Saris because I am a Sari lover. I was overwhelmed with your response on the previous Sari draping post and with that in mind I have tried a new drape this time. So let’s jump into the post.

I tried the Cancan Sari drape which has been so popular recently, but with pleats on the front. With my personal experience it is a great way to drape your Kanchipuram/Pattu saris as the drape stays neat and secure, gives a fuller look 🙂 All you need  is your favorite Kanchipuram Sari and a matching Lehenga Skirt preferably a simple one so it doesn’t dominate your Sari 🙂 You can also add a Cancan underneath your Lehenga for a more fuller look or skip it if you don’t have one.

The tricky part of the drape is the pleats. You should make the pleats large enough to tuck in near your waist, otherwise it might look akward. The ideal length of each pleat for me was exactly the length of my palm. I will describe the steps to drape the saree below, considering you as a beginner:
1. Once you are ready wearing your blouse and Lehenga, secure the lehenga tightly so your Sari stays in place the whole time.
2. For this drape you start with the pleats on the shoulder (Pallu) first and secure it with a safety pin. Make it according to your prefernce, I like my Pallu longer so I have it that way 🙂
3. Bring the rest of the Sari to your front, covering your waist on the left side and you can start pleating.
4. Leave about 2 feet of Sari on the other end and pleat the rest of your Sari.
5. Once done, try to spread the pleats a little wider so it looks neat (they don’t stay at once place and make you look like you have a huge tummy 😉 ) and secure it with a large safety pin.
6. Tuck the pleats in, make sure everything looks neat and secure on the left side.
7. Coming back to the left over end, take the longer side and start pleating it (small to medium size pleats) all the way to the end.
8. Tuck these pleats on the back of your waist, making sure the drape is neat on the right side of your waist.
You should have a fuller pleats in your front and your Lehenga still shows a little on your back 🙂 That’s it 🙂 You are ready to rock in this look!

Adding a waist band even a simpler one, enhances the look of the drape. Here I added a long pearl chain that I have, which matches with my jewelry and luckily it was long enough to fit my waist 😉 Finish your look with some matching Indian Jewelry and you are good to go! I got my pearl set from Jewellers Lane.
